Artist's Comments

A pretty neat drawing of one of my favourite anime/manga characters, Sesshomaru. It's referenced from one of the pictures off of the 2009 calender. I'll probably end up drawing every picture off of the calender. Any advice on proportions would be much appreciated.

Hello, came here via the "Random Deviation" button.

You're asking for help with proportions, and I could give a ton of advice but I don't want to make a super-huge block of text here and annoy people with it. ^^;

I can see that you've got the "hand wired to the eye" thing down, though. While it's an important skill to develop, it can only take you so far (trust me, I was a human Xerox for years when I was in my early-mid teens). What you need to do now to get better at your art is to study understructure. Not just of drawings, but of real humans you see around you. The cool part is that once you have a full grasp of how real people and animals are built, then you can have a ton of fun exaggerating the features and having it look right. I know we've all seen characters that look "off", and in my experience it's usually because the artist doesn't have a proper grasp of anatomy. Think of it like, "You have to understand the rules before you can bend them."

And don't worry about making crappy drawings. Every terrible drawing you make is one step closer to something good. Because of this, putting pencil to paper (or stylus to Photoshop, or brush to canvas) and making a drawing is never a waste of time or materials. I saved all my old sketchbooks from the past fifteen years, and even the junk drawings done to get the "blar" out of my system look better than the junk ones in the book before.

Hope I helped, and good luck! :salute:

PS - Feel free to ask for advice anytime, and if you're bored I have a lot of WIP drawings in my Scraps folder.

Oh thanks! I really needed that, and I'm going to be taking an anatomy class at the RAF academy next year. So that should help. And my job keeps me up late, so I normally doodle in class. Which should work out great with the anatomy class :) Thank you so much for the advice!

Thanks. I guess it's pretty obvious that I'm the owner of the club you just joined. I love getting comments. Watch for more stuff here, if you like my style!
